Adult Children of Alcoholics

Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families is a recovery program for adults whose lives were negatively affected by being raised in an alcoholic or other dysfunctional family.

Many of us found that we had several characteristics in common as a result of being brought up in a dysfunctional household. We had come to feel isolated and uneasy with other people, especially authority figures. To protect ourselves, we became 'people pleasers', despite losing our own identity in the process. Commonly, we would mistake personal criticism, including constructive feedback, as a threat.

We either became alcoholics or practiced other addictive behaviour ourselves, married someone with an addiction, or both. Failing that, we found other compulsive behaviours, such as a workaholic, in order to fulfill our sick need for abandonment.
