What is TMS therapy?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy (TMS) is also referred to as rTMS. TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate the underlying brain while the patient sits back in the chair and remains fully awake. The treatment session lasts for up to one hour and can carry on with their day immediately after their session.

How does TMS therapy work?

The Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation machine is an electromagnet that can generate a magnetic force in pulses. This means it can turn on and off magnetic forces at varying speeds. The strength of these magnetic forces are similar to that of an MRI machine. This magnetic force when placed on the scalp can stimulate a very small area on the surface of the brain. This area is about the size of a ten cent coin. The TMS machine settings can generate a slow pulse, for example 1hz (one pulse per second) or a fast pulse 10Hz (ten pulses per second). A slow pulse is used to reduce the activity in the underlying brain and a fast pulse is used to activate the underlying brain. Both techniques can be useful depending on which part of the brain they are applied to.

Who is TMS therapy suitable for? (current information as at 15/02/2019)

  • If the patient has a diagnosed depressive disorder
  • If the patient is over the age of 18
  • If the patient is not pregnant
  • Patients who do not have implants in the head region (e.g., pacemakers, vagus nerve stimulators or implantable cardioverter defibrillators)
  • Trialled two or more antidepressant medications

More research is currently underway and the above criteria may change, so please keep in touch so we can provide you with the new data.

How long does TMS therapy take?

Please allow a full hour for the initial session. Following sessions will take up to 30 minutes per session. Patients should expect to commit to between 3 and 5 sessions each week for up to 30 sessions. New "theta burst" treatment protocols are now available which allow quicker sessions and fewer sessions.
