Physical medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on the management of somatic dysfunction - musculoskeletal disease, impaired function and injury. Doctors trained in Physical Medicine complete postgraduate training followed by Fellowship certification with the Australian College of Physical Medicine (ACPM). Fellows of ACPM use the post-nominals FACPM.
Rehabilitation medicine takes into consideration the bio-social factors when assisting patients restore optimum functioning. It was recognised as a principal specialty in Australia in 1978 and as a Faculty of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1991. The Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM) is the peak professional organisation for Rehabilitation Medicine education and training in Australia and New Zealand. Fellows of the AFRM use the post-nominals FAFRM (RACP).
The Australian Association of Musculosceletal Medicine is one of the professional associations in this field.
