Colorectal surgeons in Australia are Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and members of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand. They use the post-nominals FRACS and FCSSANZ.
The Society limits its membership to Surgeons who have undergone a recognised programme of training in colorectal surgery. They first complete a four year training programme in General Surgery, followed by a Specialist colorectal training as a Post Fellowship Programme.
Some colorectal surgeons undertake specialty training and complete the required qualifications at institutions in other countries. These must be assessed and recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Medical Council.
