Cardiologists investigate and treat diseases of the cardiovascular system. Cardiologists tend to specialise in specific areas such as non-invasive cardiology, interventional cardiology and paediatric cardiology.
Australian trained cardiologists are Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with specialty training in cardiology. Most are also Fellows of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand and use the post-nominal identification FCSANZ.
Overseas trained cardiologists can apply to have their specialist training and experience assessed and recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
In 2021 there were over 1600 physicians registered as cardiologists in Australia (Medical Board of Australia, Registrant data, www.ahpra.gov.au/).
