Physiotherapists treat disorders of movement that have resulted from disease or injury. Some physiotherapists specialise in areas such as aquatic physiotherapy, cardiothoracic physiotherapy, gerontology, musculo-skeletal physiotherapy, paediatrics physiotherapy, sports physiotherapy, ergonomics and occupational health.
Physiotherapists in Australia are required to be registered with the physiotherapists registration board in the state or territory they practise in. The boards are statutory authorities with primary functions of registration, protection of public health and safety, and the maintenance and promotion of professional standards.
Physiotherapists in Australia are represented by The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA). The APA Code of Conduct is available on the association's website.
Most physiotherapists are self-employed in private practice, others work for public, private and not-for-profit health care providers, educational, sports and research organisations.
